St Leger & Viney: Spotlight on David Ralphs and Peter Gordon

The world of fabrics is continually evolving. Each season we see a new display of colours, textures and more that influence our interior styles. In keeping with the latest trends in fabric offerings, we chatted to the leading innovators from St Leger & Viney about the inspirations behind the brand.

Let’s hear from the innovators behind this phenomenal brand. We asked David Ralphs, managing director of St Leger & Viney, and Peter Gordon, creative director, about what influences and inspires the brand today.

  1. What is your go to classic colour choice?
David: Most recently a living room that I did at home was in a combination of neutrals, knocked back teal blue, tarnished gold with some yellow thrown in. The combination is vibrant but relaxed and I’m really enjoying it.
As an all-time colour choice I have always found the combination of green and white to be wonderfully uplifting.
Peter: I love blue. I wear blue, I have a blue study and I’m passionate about blue and white porcelain both old and new pieces.
  2. Is there a hotel, interior or building that most inspires your work?
David: For timeless sophistication and a combination of bold colour, beautiful fabrics and superb craftsmanship I would say the Oyster Box in Umhlanga. For me it is reminiscent of gracious hotels on the Amalfi Coast in Italy.
Peter: I find an eclectic mix of cultures and styles a huge inspiration and I’m particularly moved when they are confidently combined in a seamless stylish interior. The Ham Yard Hotel in Soho London is the epitome of chic style and eclectic sophistication.
  3. A place you like to visit.
David: I love to visit Arniston, a beautiful coastal village on the Western Cape coast.
Peter: I’m always excited to visit London.
  4. Where do you go to spot new styles?
David: My work with St Leger & Viney takes me to London Design week and to Paris Deco Off each year and it is here that I am exposed to the latest trends and styles. Also important is the Salone del Mobile in Milan.
Peter: I have a background in trend forecasting so I follow tends and fashion online but most importantly I look to develop ranges that are trend relevant but most importantly resonate with our brand.
  1. Do you have a favourite restaurant?
David: La Boqueria in Johannesburg for its eclectic décor and delicious food. In Cape Town I enjoy Black Sheep on Kloof Street and its quirky sidekick, Dark Horse.
Peter: Anywhere where I can enjoy good food and good company.
  2. Who or what is your biggest design influence.
David: I am inspired by the design philosophy of the Mediterranean. I admire luxurious yet restrained interiors. The contrast of sophisticated colour and strong silhouettes creates a soulful contemporary style.
Peter: I’m very influenced by ethnic designs and the stories they tell. Each motif or design has a story, a tradition or significance. That’s what we do today, we create the threads for the tapestries of modern stories.
  3. Any interesting projects and designs you are working on?
David: We are putting the finishing touches on an exciting new St Leger & Viney decorative collection.
Peter: We’re working with designers and mills locally and internationally to curate future collections – I can’t wait to share the exciting new collections we have planned. Watch this space.

St Leger and Viney Unveils New Anthology and Scion Fabrics & Wallcoverings

St Leger & Viney is proud to announce that they are now distributing Anthology and Scion fabrics and wallcoverings.

Scion:
For homes that surprise and delight, think Scion. This is an upbeat brand with zesty colours, clean Scandi-inspired designs and fresh ideas for modern living.

According to the dictionary, the word ‘Scion’ has two meanings: ‘a young shoot or twig’ or ‘the descendent of a notable family’. It’s the perfect name for an energetic new brand that burst onto the scene in 2012 as the newest member of the Harlequin family.

Scion was conceived for modern living and filled a gap in the market for fresh, individual and reasonably priced home products. The party really started when one of our designers drew a little orange fox… Mr Fox was born and quickly became one of the most iconic designs of the decade.

When designs are this good you can’t keep them to yourself. This is why the company has also partnered with specialist manufacturers who produce Scion products under licence. Today you’ll find Mr Fox, his new friend Spike and many other Scion designs popping up on bed linen, rugs, towels, tableware and bathroom accessories.

Scion is proud to be a very British brand. Designers work from a studio in Leicestershire and only use factories that are well known and trusted for their commitments to the environment and sustainability. Because after all, our world would be nothing without foxes and hedgehogs.

Anthology
Anthology is a brand synonymous with contemporary spaces, sleek finishes, moody metropolitan colours and uncompromising innovation.

The dictionary defines Anthology as ‘a collection of artistic works that have a similar form or subject, often considered to be the best’.

Anthology began in spring 2014 as an innovative new addition to the market. Originally presented as a compendium of innovative wallcoverings, Anthology’s creative finishes, subtle textures and sophisticated complexity soon caught the eye of interior designers and hotel groups worldwide.

In 2016, they introduced a collection of contract-quality fabrics to continue Anthology’s edgy urban theme. Tactile velvets, glossy wide-width sheers introduce a new kind of cool to contemporary spaces, both domestic and commercial.

Reality Escape By Rebel Walls

Rebel Walls new trend collection Reality Escape offers wallpapers and wall murals that turn your room into something that plays your mind a bit of a trick, helping you escape reality for a while – if needed.

The design team was inspired by the current uncertainty and doomsday atmosphere that the raging pandemic has planted among many of us, and the need to take a break and letting your mind start wandering away.

“We found inspiration in sci-fi films and the gaming industry, where it’s easy to create your own alternate reality, for a well-needed escape from everyday life. These places offer us a chance to live in a fantasy, not to mention getting the freedom of making our own rules and influence our environment. – Johanna Jansson, Designer at Rebel Walls.

DYSTOPIA
Welcome to Dystopia – or anti-utopia if you will! Inspired by the gaming industry and sci-fi films, this wall mural has got it all. So whether you want to set a scene for a gaming room, a luxury niche hotel, or a bar, this wall mural won’t let you down – even if society will.

FLOUNCE
The most skilled artist truly is Mother Nature herself. This sheer wall mural creation makes us think of sand ripples, waves, or perhaps a flowy ballet skirt.

THE NEST
This sheer hand-drawn piece of artwork will cover your walls like sea foam washing up towards your feet on a Sunday beach stroll. The wall mural adds a soft, organic touch to the modern style home, or why not a fine dining restaurant?

METROPOLIS, MAZE
An oh so ah-maze-ing terracotta dream of a wall mural, where you’ll soon find those eyes wandering trying to find the way out. The inspiration was found in platform games – how about having one on your walls?

The contrasts in Rebel Walls’ trend collection bring a lot of possibilities for your walls. You’ll find light, airy, and sheer organic elements from nature, fantasy themes with floating whales and diamonds in the sky, as well as darker sceneries of abandoned cities with an Armageddon feel. So whether you want to set a scene for a gaming room, a luxury niche hotel, a bar, or a kid’s room, this collection won’t let you down.

“The designs in this collection create striking backdrops that can help you stay more focused, allowing you to maintain your work- or studying flow, or to keep up your creativity”, says Irene Gimmersta, Creative Director at Rebel Walls.
